Background & Training
Dr Ayan Sabih completed his MBBS at Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2009, and has been based in New Zealand since 2014. He undertook his internship and physician training at Waikato Hospital, a major tertiary care centre, before progressing into Respiratory Medicine specialist training at both Waikato Hospital and Wellington Hospital. He completed his advanced training with a fellowship in adult sleep medicine at Wellington Hospital.
Since July 2023, Dr Sabih has been working as a consultant respiratory and sleep medicine physician at Waikato Hospital, where he has played a key role in developing the Pleural Medicine service, and also serves as a site investigator for the AMPLE4 clinical trial at Waikato Hospital. In 2026, Ayan relocated to Australia to continue his clinical and academic career.
Dr Sabih is deeply committed to medical education, which he considers one of the most rewarding aspects of his clinical career. He is the founder of the Aotearoa New Zealand Non‑Invasive Ventilation Workshop, an annual programme designed to equip frontline physicians with practical, clinically focused skills in managing NIV in adult patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure.
